    costa rica
We went to Costa Rica. * I think Tabacon Hot Springs is my new version of Eden. * Hot rivers and massage-style waterfalls. * Black-bottomed pools of varying sizes and temperatures set into the jungle. * At the base of a volcano. There was a water slide, which meant that Elan was in heaven. * He was in a stunningly good mood for the first part of our trip, which we made sure to enjoy in case it changed suddenly. Which it did, but that's a story for later. * * Emry had a fever for the first four days of our trip, topping off at 103.9 degrees. I had to buy a thermometer at the grocery store in San Jose (Costa Rica, not California) since ... more

    hanging with fireflies
Okay, so these aren't fireflies. Have you ever tried to take pictures of fireflies?  Butterflies, Turtle Back Zoo, New Jersey We went to Costa Rica. We came home. Mikhail went on a business trip. We went on an overnight camping trip with Elan's preschool camping trip. A giant owl buzzed my windshield. Mikhail went on another business trip. My mother-in-law came to rescue me from the horrors of double-bedtime-alone duty. Mikhail came home. Elan graduated from preschool. I cried. Just a little. I got on a plane with my two boys and came to New Jersey ... more

18 months, whales & earth day
Not 18 months yet, not at the beach, Emry, February 2012I'm writing this on the other side of a migraine. Well, halfway to the other side, at least. Now that Emry's not nursing anymore, I should probably look into migraine medication. Of course, some people say, "if it were a real migraine, you'd be prone in a quiet, dark room." And I say, "how I would love to be prone in a quiet, dark room!" Who are these people who can drop everything and ... more

    Costa Rica!
Riding the Tilden Steam Train, Berkeley, February 2012We decided to take the leap into our first international travel with kids. We picked Costa Rica because:1) neither of us has been there and we both want to go;2) it's Spanish speaking, and we miss speaking - and hearing - Spanish;3) when I'm in a Latin American country I feel like I'm really away;4) yet we've traveled enough in Latin America to feel fairly comfortable;5) CR is developed enough and touristy enough that it doesn't ... more

    to the snow
When my 5-year-old got excited over a pile of dirty ice in the corner of the Andronico's parking lot, I realized it really was time to take him to the mountains to see some snow.On Serene Lake, Soda Springs, California, March 2012This was one of those trips where the planning falls apart in several different ways, enough to make superstitious types wonder whether you should go at all, or if you should just stay home and remain in your PJs as much of the ... more

    message in the sand
I love coming across other peoples' art on the beach. We are having holiday hangover after two weeks in San Diego with my family. After two weeks of fabulous sunshine, football with the guys, and rolling around in a big kid/dog pile on the ground with my sister's two-year-old, her two Bernese mountain dogs, and my parents' dog, Elan is waking up in the dark, trying to get back to sleep and failing, and telling me he misses his cousin Judah. Here's what holiday hangover looks ... more

    i think he missed me
My guys, from left: little one, big one, medium oneSemiahmoo, Washington, September 2011I jetted down to southern California for a friend's wedding BY MYSELF. I can hardly remember the last time I spent flights reading a book and working on a photo album on my computer rather than juggling a grabby baby on my lap and a preschooler who invariably needs to poop just as the baby falls asleep nursing. I alternated between reveling in the luxury and sending slightly longing glances at other ... more

    in the country
In the country, there are dirt roads and muddy puddles perfect for stomping.A wooden swing at Grandma's house.A barn full of baby goats.Who turn riotous when we enter. They're looking for milk.Elan tries feeding them hay, but they prefer the real thing. This makes me glad I have only one baby. And look, here he is (with his handsome Dada). There are other adventures to be found in the country, too -- like rock-hopping in the creek. He was fearless about climbing over the rocks and wading through the water. It was just the ... more

    welcome 2011!
It's raining in San Diego, but it's still the beach, and it's beautiful. Tonight Elan & I had a little steam in the jacuzzi at 5:30 p.m. which he thought was quite novel because it was dark. The pool and jacuzzi were lit up and it was so remarkably civilized to sit in the hot water and talk with my son about his day. He went to the science center with my parents and sister and nephew while Mikhail and I took Emry around on errands and *talked.* We've got ... more
