    love having talented friends
Thanks to my awesome & talented superhero friend Andrea Scher for gifting me with an impromptu photo shoot while we were at "book camp." She said this is my "book jacket" picture. Which led to this expression: Portraits by Andrea Scher, Mayacamas Ranch, May 2013 Andrea's Superhero Photo course starts June 24.

    more costa rica
We stayed firmly on the beaten track in Costa Rica. We went to typical tourist sites. This was intentional. Mikhail and I - and Mike and Maud, the friends we were traveling with - have done a lot of traveling off the beaten track. At times way off. But for this, our first international travel with kids, we decided that typical tourist amenities were right up our alley. In Monteverde, we went full-on nature-tourist. We visited a butterfly/insect exhibit, ... more

    costa rica
We went to Costa Rica. * I think Tabacon Hot Springs is my new version of Eden. * Hot rivers and massage-style waterfalls. * Black-bottomed pools of varying sizes and temperatures set into the jungle. * At the base of a volcano. There was a ... more

more on the "how does she do it?" question
Dandelion, Washington, August 2011Some of my favorite friends-who-also-happen-to-be-bloggers have written recently on this question I was exploring yesterday, the how does she do it? question we women tend to ask ourselves about other women who seem to effortlessly and perfectly juggle the balls that we ourselves feel we might currently be dropping.(Yes, I know there's a Sarah Jessica Parker movie with almost that title, but no, I haven't seen it. Movie theaters are not part of my current reality.)I said that I liked to ... more

    Ay, Matey
Happy Halloween! We thought this was the year that Elan would discover candy, which he thinks is just "pretty" and has no idea that it is something sweet that people love to eat. In fact, last summer when we were waiting at the airport after a long flight, he entertained himself for at least a half-hour moving different-colored toffee from one bin to another. I guess that's the plus side of having a kid who is not very interested in food.Elan was a pirate this year.It was the perfect no-cost costume ... more

    A Boy Called Nemo
About a month back, on a whim, I ordered Finding Nemo for Elan. It's a hit.I am not proud to admit that he has watched this movie (or part of it) every single day for the last two weeks. Okay, maybe three. I've lost count. Thank god for Ellen DeGeneres. Her Dory is hilarious, my salvation. And the part with the sea turtles is awe-inspiring; I always advocate skipping to the turtles. The other thing I've noticed, as this movie forms the background to my early mornings, is how impressive the ... more

    Guest Star
Yesterday Elan's naptime (a.k.a. Mama's blogging time) was devoted to cooing over Anneke Jacoba Tolla, my dear friend Janna's 3-month-old daughter. Anneke is in that gorgeous newborn cuddly phase where she falls asleep on her mama's chest and coos adorably on a blanket and just generally stirs biological urgings in women who are already feeling a bit broody. I am not talking about anyone specific here. All generalities, people.Janna Tolla (nee Woltil), with Anneke in the Moby wrapWhen Elan was baby, I was a bit of a baby carrier-a-holic. I had ... more
