    Marital Aid
For Valentine's Day this year, I got the best gifts: a single white rose, and a new dishwasher. I realize I sound like a major housewife here, but ours had been broken for six weeks, and, spoiled by modern conveniences as I am, I did not fully realize how many hours of my day would be devoted to dishwashing without it. Especially with all three of us at home all the time. And Mikhail with a still-not-fully functional thumb that causes him to drop wet, slippery things and potentially break them. Mikhail and my dad installed the dishwasher most of the way themselves, then a contractor-friend came out to help Mikhail sand down the iron countertop-rail to make it fit. Hail, domesticity!

    Ocean, I Miss You
We lived in San Diego for nearly three years, and whenever we visit I am amazed. Did we appreciate it enough? The ocean, the sunshine, the shorts in January?

    One Small Thing
I received this today from See Kai Run, a kids' shoe company that I like. I think it's a great idea, and one small thing to do to help relieve the suffering in Haiti -- and it doesn't even cost any money. If you're local to Berkeley/Oakland, there is a drop-off at Shuz of Oakland - 6012 College in Rockridge. From See Kai Run: By now you have heard about the overwhelming devastation caused by a 7.0 earthquake, which struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday evening, and the desperate need for supplies ... more

Anthem for the Day (or Month, or Year)
I first heard this song several years ago on Grey's Anatomy (yes, I love that show; don't judge me). The song stayed with me for days. I looked for it; I couldn't find it. And then, tonight in the car, after a hard day, it found me.

    Go Here.
I'm going to take a break from sorting through my stack of medical bills to tell you I really loved Steamboat Springs, Colorado. So much so that, when we were there, I found myself perusing real estate listings, a habit of mine when I find a place where I *could* imagine myself living. I have no plans to move anywhere anytime soon, but this is a sweet place to visit.Reasons to go (summer version):#1: They have aspen trees. My favorite.#2: Hot air balloon rodeo. I believe that's actually two ... more

    Wednesday Afternoon Date
Today was Elan's third swimming class. He was surprisingly serious about the whole thing. He was very intent on the songs, and singing along, and his eyes were big and wide. When it was time to kick, he made very large splashy kicking motions, his feet swinging high into the air behind him. When it was time to blow bubbles he mostly kept his mouth shut, but didn't mind if I dipped his face into the water. The lesson culminated with the teacher having him go back and forth between ... more

    Life In Miniature
I think a part of me must secretly wish I were a hobbit. I have a love for tiny houses. It hearkens back to the days when I made dollhouses, obsessed with life in miniature. And it reminds me of a time when I could fit all my belongings in my four-door Saturn. Packing up that car made me feel like a turtle -- like I could just pick up and take off at a moment's notice, if need be. It was a wonderful feeling -- of freedom, self-sufficiency, lightness. ... more

    Easiest Pet Ever
Ladybugs. They're cute, non-threatening to a kid who's getting a little afraid of bees and spiders (I have no idea where he gets that from), and they eat up to 50 common garden pests a day! Plus, at $7.50 plus tax for 1,500, how can you go wrong? We bought a container of little ladies at a local garden store. At first, bubs was not so interested. The ladybugs were fresh out of the refrigerator and in serious hibernation mode. But then we walked outside into the 80 degree heat and ... more

    This Kind of Clever
Elan and I took an excursion to IKEA yesterday. The last time we did this, we were still suffering move-in-shock, I had a long list of products to research, it was raining, dark at 4:30, we got stuck in traffic, and he cried the entire drive. And that was before we even made it into the store. This time proved that I have learned something about negotiating Life With Toddler. I had one thing to buy, I knew exactly what it was, and it was located in the kid's section. Elan ... more

    Retrospective
Elan is lucky to have a great-grandma (my Grandma Syl, known as Bubbe in our household) who knits for him. This is a good thing since his mother has been known to set aside items that need a button sewn on for when her mother-in-law visits. Bubbe's creations started arriving when Elan was still tiny.January 2007Now he is tall, and quite long in the torso, much like his dada. Recently Bubbe made him this beautiful red sweater and a vest with the same yarn.with Syl & Matty (Bubbe & Zaydeh) in ... more

    Liquid Inspiration
I am not a big coffee drinker. I don't even drink a cup a day, and if I am under-the-weather, I'll drink black tea for days on end. But I do love coffee. Especially with lots of cream and sugar (I am a total non-purist, I know). For me, coffee has always been fuel for writing. Something about that particular brand of caffeinated energy rush starts my fingers typing, even before my brain recognizes that it's fully awake. These days, I am just as liable to use the black stuff as ... more
